Turkey's Best Travel Destinations
Turkey has a wide range of interesting destinations to suit travelers of all types, from those who want to spend their vacation looking out into the beautiful blue ocean to those who would rather spend their time in a bright and busy city.
Istanbul is one of the most interesting destinations in Turkey. It has a lot to offer the visitor, including many superb museums and historical sites, such as the Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque. It is also home to the Grand Bazaar, which offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the bustle of the city and to pick up souvenirs.
The Aegean Coast of Turkey is one of the most popular destinations for travelers. As well as its interesting archaeological sites, which include the ancient city of Ephesus, the Aegean Coast is known for its beautiful beaches. Izmir is a busy city that is a popular base for visitors to Turkey's Aegean coast since it provides a good base for exploring the region, although the city itself has little to offer the visitor. Izmir was once known as Smyrna. Nearby Kusadasi is a popular resort town, however, which is well-known for its nightlife.
Bodrum is an interesting historical town that was once known as Halicarnassus. The main attraction in the town is now the Castle of Saint Peter, which is believed to have been partially constructed using stone taken from the lost Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the world. Today, Bodrum is an attractive town with much to explore within the town itself and the surrounding area.
Anatolia is a region of southern Turkey that is full of interesting historical and archaeological sites. The town of Antalya is the most popular tourist destination in the area. It is a busy resort town which draws in large numbers of tourists.
Cappadocia is one of the most unique attractions in Turkey, although it is located in the eastern part of the country rather than along the popular western coast. Cappadocia is a region of rock spires and formations that looks as if it belongs on an alien world. Many of the caves and rock formations have been converted into homes, some of which can be explored by visitors. The most popular destination in Cappadocia for tourists is the Goreme Valley. The town of Ürgrüp is a good base from which to explore Cappadocia.
Pamukkale is an area of hot springs in southwestern Turkey that has become a popular tourist attraction for many visitors. It is also a World Heritage site. Ankara, the capital of Turkey, is not one of the best travel destinations in the country, although it can provide a good stopping place if you are making a tour of the country rather than staying in one place. It is not the best place to spend an entire vacation, however, particularly if you have not been to the country before.
