Turkey's Biggest Airports

If you have decided to travel to Turkey and you will be flying into the country then you will need to decide which airport you want to fly into and out of for your vacation. Turkey has a number of large airports to choose from, so you will be able to find an airport near to the location where you want to spend your time in the country.

The biggest and busiest airport in Turkey is Atatürk International, which is located in Istanbul. Istanbul does also have another, smaller international airport, so it is important to make sure that you know which airport your departure flight will be leaving from so that you know where you will need to be. The smaller Istanbul airport is Sabiha Gökçen International. This smaller airport is slightly further from the center of Istanbul than Atatürk International. Most of the international flights to and from Sabiha Gökçen International are cheap services connecting Turkey with various European countries, particularly Germany. Atatürk International is the second busiest airport in the Middle East, following Dubai's international airport. Turkey's Sabiha Gökçen International is one of the fastest growing airports in the whole of Europe.

Turkey has a number of other large airports outside of Istanbul. It is possible to fly in and out of the airports in Antalya, Bodrum, Izmir and Dalaman on international flights. If you want to fly to any of the other cities in Turkey, including Ankara, you will usually need to fly into Istanbul first and then take a second fight to your final destination. Antalya is a big airport that is reasonably close to the city center. It offers international flights in the summer months only, but there are flights to Istanbul and Ankara all year round.

  • Milas Bodrum Airport lies between Milas and Bodrum. It has flights to and from Istanbul on a daily basis.
  • Izmir's Adnan Menderes is the best airport for travelers who want to fly to Ephesus, Pammukkale or Selçuk from Ankara or Istanbul.
  • Dalaman is the closest airport to popular destinations such as Fethiye and Marmaris. It has daily flights to Ankara and Istanbul.
  • Ankara airport mainly has domestic Turkish flights, although there are a few international routes.

Two other airports in Turkey that it is helpful to be aware of are those in Nevşehir and Kayseri, which are both ideally located if you want to take an internal fight to visit Cappadocia during your time in Turkey. These may not be as large as the biggest airports in Turkey, but they are frequently used by tourists.

The national Turkish Airlines offers international flights between Istanbul and most of the main capital cities around the world. This airline has a reliable safety record and it usually offers good service, so it is worth considering if you are flying to and from Turkey. Many other international airlines also serve Turkey, so there are usually a range of different choices available when you are planning your travel.

If you will be flying during your trip to Turkey then you should be aware that the prices for food in Turkish airports tend to be high, even by airport standards. The price of a cup of coffee at Atatürk International can be up to double that in other major European airports. You might therefore want to avoid buying snacks or drinks while you are in the airport, particularly if you are traveling on a budget.
